"Bless this ship and all who sail in her," said Mrs. Meryl Chertoff, ship's sponsor, before smashing a champagne bottle against the bow of the National Security Cutter Bertholf to christen her at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Pascagoula, Miss. facility. Chertoff, wife of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, is the sponsor for this newest tool in the U.S. Coast Guard's arsenal. The 418-foot vessel will become part of the Integrated Coast Guard Systems Deepwater initiative, protecting the nation at home and abroad.
