NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 14, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that employees at its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division donated $1.6 million to the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula. NNS is the largest single contributor to the campaign.

"We challenged our shipbuilders to raise $1.5 million, and we are proud to have exceeded that goal," said Chavis Harris, NNS' director, EEO, Diversity and Corporate Citizenship. "Newport News Shipbuilding has always embraced corporate social responsibility. It is an honor for us to give back to the Virginia Peninsula, where we not only make the world's greatest military ships, but also where many of our shipbuilders live and raise their families."

NNS collected donations across the shipyard during the month of November. Shipbuilders who donated were able to direct their contributions to the organizations of their choice, including the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Peninsula, Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, the YWCA of the Virginia Peninsula and USO of Hampton Roads.

"Our community benefits greatly from the generous support provided by Newport News Shipbuilding and its employees," said Ty Joubert, president of United Way of the Virginia Peninsula. "At a time when needs are greater than ever, it is comforting to know that the Peninsula has backing from our region's largest employer. We congratulate the shipyard employees for yet another job well done."

United Way is a worldwide network in 46 countries and territories—including nearly 1,300 local organizations in the United States—that advances the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the three key building blocks of education, income and health.
