AVONDALE, La., March 3, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has received recognition from the U.S. government for excellence in workplace health and safety at several different locations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) recognized "merit" status for the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding sector's Avondale, La., facility. Shipbuilding facilities in Gulfport, Miss., and Continental Maritime in San Diego have also been awarded merit status. Merit status recognizes a strong potential and commitment to meet goals tailored to a facility and to achieve STAR quality within three years.

Shipbuilding facilities in Waggaman and Tallulah, La., have been awarded the prestigious STAR status, the highest level of recognition. The Pascagoula, Miss., facility is preparing for a future VPP evaluation. The company's Shipbuilding facility located in Newport News, Va., was recertified as STAR status by OSHA in February.

"For OSHA to recognize our facilities at any level is a significant achievement and I'm proud of our entire workforce," Jim Thornton, director of environmental, health and safety for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. "We have celebrated accident-free days at these facilities and we'll continue to improve toward getting safety recognitions at all sites."

VPP is an OSHA program designed to promote effective worksite-based safety and health. It is a partnership between companies and OSHA to establish and improve safety and health programs. Acceptance into VPP is OSHA's official recognition of outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health.
