NEWPORT NEWS, Va., June 22, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that an Apprentice School basketball player from its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division received the 2012 Outstanding In-State Male Athlete of the Year award from the Peninsula Sports Club (PSC). After being named the recipient on May 29, Isaih Harrison was presented the award at the PSC Headliners Night on June 18.
"With all the talented athletes that come from this area, to be recognized by the Peninsula Sports Club is definitely an honor and a privilege," Harrison said when he received the award. "I am extremely thankful to my teammates, coaches, all the craft instructors, faculty members and staff of The Apprentice School to be nominated for the award."
Harrison, also named Co-Apprentice School Athlete of the Year, is the third Apprentice School student to receive this honor from the PSC. He is a three-time U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) First Team All-American, the first in Apprentice School history. During his final season, Harrison set nine career records and 12 single-season records.
Harrison, a senior, is studying to become a sheet metal mechanic. Originally from Abbeville, La., he graduated from Denbigh High School before enrolling as an apprentice in 2008. Because of his expertise in the sheet metal program, he was selected in 2011 to be the "mold in place" specialist for the Tiger Team that works on shipbuilding operations.
Tiger Team Supervisor Bo Russell said, "Mr. Harrison blended in well with his team of craftsmen and was always engaged and ready to work new processes without hesitation."
Founded in 1919 by Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), The Apprentice School maintains its traditional roots as a trade school while integrating a fully accredited, modern college curriculum. By offering 20 shipbuilding disciplines and six advanced programs of study, The Apprentice School provides students with on-the-job training as well as classroom instruction to better prepare them for careers in the shipbuilding industry.
