NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Aug. 30, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE:HII) announced today that Marty Womack, a crane operator specialist working at its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division, has been recognized as a recipient of the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association's Safety and Health Achievement Award.
The 29-year shipyard veteran was presented with the award during an Aug. 29 ceremony at the organization's annual conference in New Orleans. The award was created to acknowledge non-managerial employees at VPPPA member sites who have taken exceptional initiative to learn and apply safety and health best practices.
"Safety is not something you just do at work or at home," Womack said. "Safety should be a way of life."
The VPPPA Safety and Health Achievement Program was created in 1997 to formally recognize the contributions of employees at VPPPA member sites in safety, health and environmental program management. The program is an opportunity for hourly, non-safety and health professionals to be recognized for their knowledge of safety and health issues and outreach activities at their worksite and in the community.
"We are proud of Marty's accomplishment and the daily efforts he makes to ensure the safety of his coworkers," said Danny Hunley, NNS' vice president of operations. "Our shipbuilders are the heart of our operations, and their safety is our top priority."
