NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Sept. 15, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries' (NYSE:HII) UniversalPegasus International (UPI) subsidiary recently was awarded the TransCanada Vice President's Silver Award for Excellence in Safety Performance, the highest tier award received by a contractor on TransCanada's Gulf Coast Project.

TransCanada awarded UPI this honor due to its project performance and the proactive implementation of a driver awareness program as part of UPI's safety campaign. UPI employees had to drive several million miles through rugged terrain over the course of the Gulf Coast Project, making safe driving a priority.

"The level of effort and continual commitment demonstrated by our field crews was the primary reason UPI earned this recognition from our client," said Tom Davison, UPI's senior vice president, operations. "Meeting or exceeding our client expectations was a collaborative effort by all stakeholders, and achieving this milestone will allow us to carry forward these best management practices for safety to other projects."

The Gulf Coast Project is a 485-mile, 36-inch crude oil pipeline beginning in Cushing, Okla., and extending south to Nederland, Texas, to serve the Gulf Coast marketplace. UPI has safely provided preliminary and as-built survey, GIS, mapping, construction management, inspection, detailed design and procurement services for the project. UPI also provided the same services for the original Keystone Project that completed the first two phases in 2010 and 2012.

UPI has provided a broad range of engineering and project management services to the energy industry for over 50 years. Whether onshore or offshore, from the wellhead to processing facilities to delivery points, UPI delivers the project management, engineering, design, survey, inspection and construction management personnel to move energy safely, reliably and efficiently to domestic and international marketplaces.
