MEDIA ADVISORY -- Newport News Shipbuilding to Host Career Day Challenge for Area High School Students




What:   Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will host 600 area high school sophomores
    and juniors for engineering career day events in partnership with the Peninsula
    Engineers Council (PEC) and NASA Langley Research Center to challenge their
    skills and educate them about engineering as a career.
When:   Thursday, Feb. 21 Peninsula high school students
    Friday, Feb. 22 Southside high school students
Schedule for both days:
  9 a.m.   Open House—students have an opportunity to talk to
      representatives from NNS, the PEC and NASA Langley in fields
      of their interest.
  10 a.m.   Presentation by Chris Giersch, NASA Langley education and
      public outreach manager
  10:15 a.m.   Round Robin begins—students rotate between career
      tables and talk with NNS and NASA Langley engineers
  11:15 a.m.   Design challenge begins—students team up to
      participate in an engineering design challenge (NNS duct tape
      boat building contest or NASA marshmallow lunar lander
  12:15 p.m.   Lunch and presentation by Ron Murray, NNS vice president of
      quality and process excellence
  12:30 p.m.   Recognition of Design Challenge Winners by NNS Nuclear
      Plant Engineer John Edwards, the 2012 PEC Young Engineer of
      the Year
